Marcozero is the project created and presented during the Artistic Residency at the Edifício Lutetia of the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation – FAAP in São Paulo, Brazil, in collaboration with the artists Valentina Vetturi and Katia Meneghini.
The project aims to investigate how the hundreds of homeless people who occupy the Praça da Sé space in São Paulo live and establish a relationship of trust and mutual collaboration: the artists spent the three months of their residency visiting the square daily and interacting with the homeless people. By questioning us about their needs and their life stories, they gradually started a process of mutual understanding, identifying together ways of collaborating so that the square would become a better place where everyone could experience it and enjoy its evocative spaces. From these meetings three different actions were born: Street Vendors, The Guide and Sow.

The Guide – Considering one of the residents as a sort of ‘leader’ of the group, the artists invited him to introduce us to the square as a local tourist guide. They filmed the entire route and made copies of the video to sell to tourists who visit the square. The aim was to collaborate with different ways of experiencing the square and using it to work and earn a living. The action aimed to contribute to increasing the self-esteem of the residents/occupants of the square, making them realize their talents and using them to their advantage as a means of work and economic support.

Street vendors – Using the same type of wheelbarrows used by the transporters of goods who pass through the square to deliver orders to the shopkeepers, the artists created a library of art books, donated by students and teachers of the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation and also set up a cafeteria to offer to the readers, free of charge, some coffee prepared by local bars and served by the women who lived in the square and who usually sold it clandestinely in thermos flasks.
During the action, the artists discussed art and its infinite interpretations, with passers-by and homeless people, to learn from each other and discover new possibilities of interpretation through spontaneous and non-academic views.

Sow – The proposal was to grow together in the abandoned flowerbeds some species of plants and flowers that could also serve as food, as well as embellish the square, creating a more welcoming and pleasant environment.
